Already without power forward Scott Hartnell the Flyers have lost another big presence in front of the net.

Wayne Simmonds caught a flying elbow by Capitals defenseman John Erskine in the face during the first period tonight. Simmonds will not return to the game, his nose was bloodied and he was slow to get up after the hit. This is another blow to a Flyers team that is struggling to score goals in the early going of the shortened 48 game season.

Flyers GM Paul Holmgren said that Simmonds does not have a concussion or a broken nose but is suffering from whiplash and a “head injury.” Team is not yet sure of Simmonds status for tomorrow.
